Dorothy Cross

Irish artist Dorothy Cross uses a variety of media including sculpture, photography, video, and installation to explore the relationship between living beings and the natural environment. Living on the wild west coast of Ireland, Cross collects materials and inspiration from the shoreline, sometimes incorporating found items like boats and animal skins into her works. Her assemblages, which may incorporate materials such as cow skins and cow udders, often straddle the boarder between disturbing and humorous, erotic and poetic.

Cross presented a major commission along with other works in her solo exhibition Connemara at Turner Contemporary, UK in 2013, which then toured to Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. Also in 2014, Cross presented Trove at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, which included works the artist selected from the National Collections of Ireland. Other solo shows include Bloomberg Space in London, and McMullen Museum Boston College. Cross participated in the Venice Biennale (1993), Istanbul Biennial (1997) and Liverpool Biennial (1998).
