Chantal Peñalosa

Chantal Peñalosa (1987) was born and raised in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. A border town that has become her experimental playground, a sort of expanded artist’s studio from where she develops part of her work. This space allows her to articulate the cultural references from both sides of the border and to generate insight from a specific angle.

Through gesticulation and actions that intervene in daily life, she establishes dialogues with entities that apparently can’t answer back: memories, rumors, architecture, rocks, clouds, scents, or facial articulations. Theatrical gestures remain archived in photographs, sculptures, installations, publications, or videos.

Her explorations deal with phenomena like waiting, the unseen, and time passing by, where one is able to glimpse into political and social aspects. More recently she worked on passages of art history and literature that have had a “stand by” temporality because they have been omitted, forgotten, or rejected.
