Beth Sutherland
Beth Sutherland is a painter and printmaker whose imagery evokes the architecture and landscape of the urban/suburban environment. Much of what she depicts is in plain sight, but it is often deliberately or unconsciously overlooked. Sutherland works only from direct observation, with her preliminary work taking the form of watercolors and drawings made on site, which brings a sense of urgency in recording the transitory light and weather. What had at first seemed solid and stationary becomes more complex and alive. A grouping of buildings or an odd embellishment often suggests an unarticulated imaginary narrative of the occupants and passers-by. Back in the studio, she works from those drawings and memory to create a fresh, concise, and composed image retaining the mystery (and sometimes comedy) that initially attracted her.
Sutherland was awarded a NYFA Fellowship in 1998-1999, and had previously held a SECCA Seven Fellowship in 1989. She received a Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation Space Program Fellowship in 2007-2008, a SIP Fellowship at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop in 2011, and a STAR residency at the Guttenberg Arts Center in Guttenberg, NJ in 2014. She has exhibited widely in group shows, including the International Print Center (IPCNY), Edward Hopper House Art …
