Amy Pleasant

On paper, canvas or wall, Amy Pleasant explores simple, everyday acts—private moments, sleep and rest. The drawn or painted line, shifting in scale from intimate to vast, simultaneously anchors and opens each work, while placing the viewer at close range. Most of the figures are shown in unoccupied spaces, looking outward, perhaps through a window or toward the edge of a horizon. They are the indistinct places that any of us have passed through or seen, where meaningful events happened or not. Pleasant calls attention to both memory and experience, and how the passage of time blurs both.

Amy Pleasant’s solo exhibitions include the Birmingham Museum of Art, AL, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, GA, Clough-Hanson Gallery, Rhodes College, Memphis, TN, and Whitespace, Atlanta, GA. Group exhibitions include The Weatherspoon Art Museum, NC, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Columbus Museum of Art, GA, Hunterdon Art Museum, Chattanooga, TN, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, NC, and the Art in Embassies Program. She co-founded The Fuel And Lumber Company with Pete Schulte in summer of 2013.
