About The Work
Artspace is pleased to announce a new limited edition silkscreen by contemporary painter Anne Buckwalter. Named one of the most fascinating artists in America by Galerie magazine, Buckwalter is known for domestic scenes that adorn the flattened style of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art style with hallmarks of contemporary life.
Rendered with luxurious color and meticulous detail, Buckwalter’s new edition of 40 prints is brought to life with hand-painted gouache, spot varnish, and silkscreen on smooth fabric paper. Miscellaneous objects strewn across the bed encourage us to consider connections between beauty, sensuality, pleasure, and pain. Look closer, and a few unexpected secrets are found hiding in plain sight.
“There are three general themes that tend to guide my creative practice. Creating intentional ambiguity, exploring female identity, and embracing contradictions. I locate the intersection of these themes by making narrative paintings that use mysterious figures and uncanny spaces to think about gender roles, the female body, and intimacy.” —Anne Buckwalter
Self-Portrait with Hairbrush, Pen, Book, Leash, and Collar is produced in partnership with the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) and will be on view at NADA New York, May 2 - 5, 548 West 22nd Street. Proceeds from the sale of the limited edition will support NADA’s mission as a not-for-profit collective of professionals working with contemporary art.
