About The Work
In celebration of their 25th Anniversary in 2014, Inner-City Arts re-launched a program to collaborate with contemporary artists to produce fine art benefit editions. The Lapis Press was honored to work with Inner-City Arts and Alexandra Grant to create this inaugural edition and to help raise awareness of Inner-City Art’s services within the Los Angeles fine arts community and beyond.
Alexandra Grant’s series of prints for Inner-City Arts, Letters from Century of Self, are images that address the questions of identity and one’s concept of self. Based on quotes from Shakespeare, Sophocles, Rimbaud, Walt Whitman, and the artist herself, Letters explores the tension between the meaning of language and its visual representations.
“My Century of Self paintings document the search for an authentic self and the creation of hope, meaning and purpose of life. I’m pleased by how well Letters aligns with Inner-City Arts and their mission to cultivate creativity within Los Angeles youth.” – Alexandra Grant
