About The Work
"Kiki" depicts Francesco Clemente's friend and fellow artist, Kiki Smith. Smith and Valerie Hammond invited Clemente to speak to their students at New York University where they co-teach a class in printmaking. There, Clemente etched this portrait of Smith. In the truly collaborative spirit of printmaking, Hammond inked the plate and pulled a proof on the spot at NYU. Smith and Hammond, longtime friends of the Neiman Center, brought the plate to our printshop to complete the edition. The result is this mesmerizing depiction of Smith looking out at the viewer with large, searching eyes, a feature found in many of Clemente’s figurative images.
