About The Work
The ‘Torso Paintings’ are divided into two vertical, symmetrical and specular halves, referring to the torso, our spine, the centre of the body from which the limbs extend, which is the centre of all our movements. The axis of rotation of the painting makes the colour move in all directions. The works act as fragments of corporeity, allowing physical dynamics to emerge.
These anthropomorphic fragments are inspired, among other things, by ancient sculptures, such as those that can be seen in the Pergamon Altar on the Museum Island in Berlin. The central thread of the series is the central rotation. However, it is not just a frontal pair, but an attempt to rotate the vertical axis by 360 degrees. Since a painting is in itself a flat surface, this momentum takes place in the imagination, in imaginary pictorial space. For the artist, abstract reflections on the dimensions of pictorial space and the perception of multidimensionality play a fundamental role in painting. The materiality of the painting, as well as our own physicality, are opposed to abstract ideas.
