Multimedia works of art combine different forms of content like still images, audio, video, and text. Multimedia differs from mixed media in that it often incorporates electronic or new media elements, like audio, video, or interactive digital content. Multimedia differs from mixed media in that it often incorporates electronic or new media elements, like audio, video, or interactive digital content. A multimedia work may combine traditional and new media in unexpected ways: for example, contemporary artist Jennifer Levonian makes digital stop-motion videos out of hand-painted watercolor stills. As another example, Dutch artist Martin Baas made his “Analog Digital Clock” from his “Real Time” series by filming a man painting and erasing the iconic red display of a digital clock in real time. As in the case of both of these artists, a multimedia work may come in the form of a video for which the purchaser must supply the mode of display. Other times, the display is a part of the work itself. Nam June Paik, considered by many to be the father of video art, made elaborate multimedia installations using neon lights, television monitors, and other electronic devices. This presents a challenge for curators and conservators as the devices cease to function, but may no longer be replaced due to obsolescence.
Multimedia may also refer to time-based events that may also be classified as performance art or happenings. The term was first applied to events organized by iconic pop artist Andy Warhol featuring performances by the then-newly formed art rock group The Velvet Underground. Other artists whose work is labeled as multimedia include Andrea Zittel, Susan Hiller, and Jeremy Blake.
