Steve Pauley
Steve Pauley’s studio practices have been informed by his background in stone carving— for over a decade, he made thousands of gravestones for his community. He has since developed a unique process he calls "Stone Reflection Photography" where he uses his stone engravings to create black and white photograms (or camera-less photography). He learned that the textures he carves in the stone create 3-Dimensional shadows when light is raked across their surfaces, which can be manipulated in a darkroom to make unique photograms. Further research has led him to using anamorphic perspective in his carvings so that he can control the depth of field of the photogram. His process is a combination of drawing, sculpting, engraving and photo development.
Pauley has shown internationally, including at Skolska28 Prague, CR. Solo exhibitions include The Gallery at St. Mary the Virgin cathedral in Times Square, the Broadway Gallery in New York, Amalie Rothschild Gallery in Baltimore and Della Brown Taylor Gallery, WVSU, among others. Pauley’s worked has been reviewed by the New York Times, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Charleston Daily Mail, and NY Arts Magazine, and his work has been featured on All Things Considered on NPR and on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. …
