Themes+Projects, formally Modernbook gallery, specializes in innovative and contemporary fine art. We work with artist that span the spectrum from emerging to mid-career. Their techniques may fall in the tradition of darkroom practices; venture into the realm of alternative or mixed media; or experiment with digital technology.
History
Established in 1999.
Modernbook first opened its doors on University Ave, in Palo Alto, California. In the early days, we focused on carrying art books that were not readily available at the big chain books shops. As time passed, we began to show artwork by local artists and our concept shifted into an art gallery/bookstore.
In 2010, Modernbook relocated from Palo Alto to the historic 49 Geary art building in San Francisco. By this time our business model had changed to full time gallery and book publisher. In spring of 2015, Modernbook re-branded to Themes+Projects. We are very excited to announce that Themes+Projects is part of the new art center, The Minnesota Street Project, located in the Dogpatch neighborhood in San Francisco.
