Bruce Haines, Mayfair
LondonBruce Haines, Mayfair is the new name of what for eight years was Ancient & Modern. We can now be found adjacent to St George’s, a beautiful 18th-century church built to meet the spiritual needs of those who had moved out of the City of London into leafier suburbs. Mayfair was so rural in those days that partridge and snipe could be shot from the church’s pillared portico. Designed by a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren, the altarpiece was painted by William Kent (1685–1748). St George’s visiting alumni include George Frideric Handel who composed on the original organ. As Mayfair is full of things that really are ancient and modern, it seems the right time for us to leave this curatorial framework behind, and to concentrate on the core interests of the artists we continue to represent in this discrete and domestically scaled environment.
