Balice Hertling
ParisBalice Hertling was founded in Paris in September 2007 by Daniele Balice and Alexander Hertling. Balice Hertling was one of the first galleries to open in the district of Belleville where they used to share a space with Castillo/Corrales, a collective of artists, curators and writers. With Castillo/Corrales they alternated exhibitions and hosted lectures, performances and book launches. in 2009, Balice Hertling relocated to a new space in the neighbourhood which was inaugurated with a site specific installation by Oscar Tuazon. Since the beginning, the gallery has hosted the first solo exhibitions of many young artists both French and international and represents emerging artists like Neïl Beloufa, Sebastian Black, Isabelle Cornaro and Sam Falls amongst others. The gallery has also hosted exhibitions with artists of older generations such as Michelangelo Pistoletto and Gianfranco Pardi and represents the works of British conceptual artist Stephen Willats, American feminist artist Mary Beth Edelson and Syrian born painter and sculptor Simone Fattal who have been showing since the 1960’s and have greatly influenced many of the younger generation of artists. As expats living in Paris, Daniele Balice and Alexander Hertling have worked to build an international community by supporting foreign artists in France and introducing French artists abroad. To this end, from 2012 to 2016, they had a project space at the Film Center building in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan where they hosted exhibitions curated by friends and collaborators.
