Martha Tuttle
Martha Tuttle employs materials such as wool, silk, metal, and dye, using spinning, weaving and sewing as drawing tools in her artistic process. Her color palette is inspired by the beige desert landscape reminiscent of her childhood in Mexico. Works that inspire her are Candice Lin’s installations, Ana Mendieta’s political content and sense of form, and Bas Jan Ader’s play with sentimentality and absurdity. Tuttle mixes elements of textile and sculpture to create a serene atmosphere that is deeply personal. Her work demonstrates a poetic interpretation of painting and an interest in geometric abstraction.
Tuttle has had solo and two-person exhibitions at
Luce Gallery in Turin, Italy, Tilton Gallery in New York, NY, Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago, IL, and In Limbo in Brooklyn, NY. Group exhibitions include Deli Gallery in Queens, NY, DUMBO Open Studios in Brooklyn, NY, Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT, Doyers in New York, Van Doren Waxter in New York, Halsey McKay Gallery in East Hampton, NY, Able Baker Contemporary in Portland, ME, Rose Arcade in Joshua Tree, CA, Triumph in Chicago, IL, LMAK Gallery in New York, The Fortnight Institute in New York, Radical Abacus in Santa Fe, NM, Distillery Gallery in Boston, …
