Peters's psychedlic paintings are actually deconstructed works where the artist exposes previously applied layers, creating pieces that resemble colorful tree stumps, with each ring revealing a point in the past. Also opening at the gallery is Patrick Lee's show of new drawings portraying spooky strangers on the streets of southern California rendered in angelic poses.

Opening Reception for Helke Bayrle's "Portikus Under Construction" at Ludlow 38, 38 Ludlow Street, 6 – 8 p.m. (Through May 19th)
For the artist's first show in the United States, held at the downtown satellite of the Goethe-Institut New York, she'll be presenting "behind-the-scenes" videos of artists like Frances Stark and Wade Guyton unpacking, arranging, and contemplating their art as it's installed for exhibitions.
Art Talk: "Collecting Art for Love, Money, and More" at 92YTribeca, 200 Hudson Street, 6:30 p.m., $24
Art advisors Thea Westreich Wagner and Ethan Wagner will be joined by Christie's international co-head of postwar and contemporary art Amy Cappellazzo and Artists Space executive director Stefan Kalmar as they discuss the secrets of successful collectors, which also happens to be the topic of their newly released book (which we profiled here on Artspace).

Organized for the 70th anniversary of the artist's birth, this exhibition looks at work the German artist created in the later years of his life.
Opening Reception for Maya Lin's "Here and There" at Pace Gallery, 32 East 57th Street, 6 – 8 p.m. (Through June 22nd)
For the "Here" portion of her two-part exhibition (with "There" being shown in London), the celebrated artist will be presenting sculptures and drawings that map the geography of New York State and the island of Manhattan.
Opening of "I, YOU, WE" at the Whitney Museum, 945 Madison Avenue, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. (Through September 1st)
Using three simple personal pronouns as prompts, the museum structured a survey of works from their collection that were all created in the 1980s and early '90s.

This series of photographs looks at one single stretch of beach in Portugal seen at multiple hours of the day and cycles of the tide, as its popularity with beachgoers waxes and wanes.
Opening Reception for Tony Fitzpatrick's "The Other Kind" at Pierogi, 177 North 9th Street, Brooklyn, 7 – 9 p.m. (Through May 26th)
Small, colorful collages inspired by the artist's interest in motorcyle clubs like the Black Knights, Yellow Jackets, and Stoned Riders are the centerpieces of this show, which is part of a larger opening also featuring fourteen drawings (and one painting) by James Esber.

Serial seductress and oversharer Nakadate has invited any and everyone to come "confess, detail, and atone" for their past deplorable acts.
Opening Reception for Arthur Ou at Brennan & Griffin, 55 Delancey Street, 6 – 8 p.m. (Through June 9th)
Although best known for his photography (which can also be seen at a concurrent exhibition at nearby P! Gallery), Ou presents a series of paintings in this show that delve into the artist's fascination with the human mind's ability to conjure inspired mental images.
