James Hayward

James Hayward creates monochromatic abstract paintings that are rich in color and surface texture. His vibrant work is characterized by thick brushstrokes and layers of paint that the artist mixes directly on the canvas, engulfing the viewer in a symphony of color and surface texture.

Hayward’s work has been exhibited in group and solo shows, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Institute for Contemporary Art, London, and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.  He has received many grants and fellowships, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.
