Pentimenti Gallery welcomes the spring season with a solo exhibition by KEVIN FINKLEA.

For Spring 019, Kevin Finklea presents a series of brilliantly painted wooden objects. At their core, these works appear as a counteraction to our fast-paced and often anxiety-ridden contemporary culture. Uniquely, each piece is created with exceptional attention to detail.

Carefully selected lumber, deliberately constructed forms and masterful application of rare pigments are at the forefront of this transcendent work. Finklea’s exploration of translucency and opacity paired with his juxtaposition of subtle color value variations and tonal interactions lead to work that appears to shift with the light and angle of viewing. Each piece invites viewers to spend time with the work, challenging them to contemplate the personal experience of viewing art, and rewarding those who approach the work with thoughtful consideration.

Finklea says of this series of work, “Recently, I’ve been thinking about the notion of constants. There aren’t any for most of us in daily living, with life becoming an endless 24 hour stream of distractions and anxieties. Thankfully it's different for most artists, as there are processes, forms and motifs that reoccur in our work. In my case it’s quite simple. I don’t make pictures. I make things.

In the Project Room, Lost and Found refers to a work on paper made for me by my instructor and colleague Bligé Friedlaender (b 1934, d 2000). After graduating, I worked as her assistant for over a decade. One of the issues we frequently discussed was loosing the thread of one's work. Equally, we exchanged views upon the importance of the process of restoring that thread in one's work. Lost and Found is dedicated to Bilgé's memory.”

Kevin Finklea received his BA from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA.
