“Eco” [Echo] as a sound produced by a reflection, as an indistinct sound, rumour our noise; eco as prefix: (eco)logy, word, discourse, language, theory; (eco)graphy, writing, record, study; (eco)nomy, rule, law, use; (eco)system, set, group, combination.

Somewhere between São Miguel and Marinha Grande – places where Pedro Tudela worked in residency over the past few months – is drawn the liquid geography that originated the project that is now presented at Kubikgallery and that integrates diverse mediums such as the sculptural object, sound sculpture, drawing and photography.

Blown glass pieces on wooden boards returned by the sea; musical score sheets as rips on the landscape sewed with a sewing-machine with black thread; the sheets of wet paper that stands out, in negative, smears, strokes, overlaps, deviations to the grid; almost symmetric objects arranged on the wall in a false balance and occult tension; photographic images that dissolve into lava or rarefy in mist.

The exhibition opens with a sound sculpture, establishing right away a particularly immersive and in spatial reverberation perceptive way, which operates “a gathering of the intermittences between two sound limits” – to quote this beautiful and just phrase of the author himself. It is not insignificant that we enter the exhibition by its sound [we can close our eyes but we cannot close our ears]. The composition – an extensive sonic mesh that originated in the recording of drops of water falling into a sparse in the interior of an architectonic wooden structure – establishes the conceptual structure of the entire exhibition: as an “eco” [echo], in an imitation mode, memory or trace, in false symmetry or folding down, as repetition of a sound resent by a body. Our body.

As every intervention by Pedro Tudela, “>e(c(o<“ is designed with a geometrical accuracy non Euclidean. That is to say, in negligible delay or in false symmetry, in a game of echoes that questions, in duration and extension, namely, in spatial and temporal dimensions, “the ability of a place becoming something else, that is, by the relation of the plane in space (facts that follow one another) or by comparison, that we naturally do, between two or more unequal quantities”.
