Ekaterina Vanovskaya

Pale, distressed figures inhabit Ekaterina Vanovskaya’s large-scale oil paintings. There are several repeating themes in the paintings: loneliness, nostalgia, longing, melancholia and a search for a sense of place. There are often figures depicted doing mundane tasks, or caught in a state of hesitation or fear, in forlorn atmospheres. Vanovskaya’s watercolors are an extension of her oil painting narratives. The watercolors depict segments and scenes that nourish the larger paintings. The experience of making the watercolors outside, in the landscape, brings freshness and color vitality to Vanovskaya’s studio work. The drawings, as well as the watercolors, play an integral role in Vanovskaya’s studio practice.

Vanovskaya has exhibited nationally including New York City and Chicago. She completed the Artist in the Marketplace Program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts and recently participated in the Governors Island Art Fair, New York. Ekaterina teaches at Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ and Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA.
