Dan Miller
Primarily working with pencil, pen, and paint on paper, Dan Miller layers words and numbers on top of each other to create visceral abstract works. Diagnosed with autism, Miller struggles to communicate through normative language, however his artwork employs linguistic and mathematical nominations as a fundamental departure point to create his own way of communicating. Miller begins by focusing on objects, paying particular attention to light bulbs, electrical sockets, and food, and continues by drawing images, words, and numbers related to the object repeatedly. This process continues until his collection of figures and gestures clash and take over the paper. The words and numbers found on the paper often hold strong personal and biographical meaning, referencing names of family members, important dates, and specific locales. In doing so his drawings combine both conceptual and expressive approaches, creating textures through layers, which simultaneously emerge into sight and disappear from existence.
Miller has shown solo exhibitions at Ricco Maresca in New York, Galerie Christian Berst in Paris, and White Columns in New York. His pieces have also shown at group exhibitions at Gavin Brown’s enterprise, ABCD in Paris and has been featured at Frieze New York, The Armory Show, and NADA Miami. …
