Artists Who Made the News Last Week

For happy reasons or sad, these artists have been in the news recently. Collect the artists making headlines this week.

 • Kerry James Marshall broke the record for being the most expensive living Black American artist to sell at auction. Earlier this month his painting Past Times sold at Sotheby's for a whopping $21.1 million!

 • Regretfully, Robert Indiana passed away this week at the age of 89. He's the Pop artist behind "one of the most recognizable artworks of the 20th century," according to the New York Times.

 • Though the Sotheby's estimated Cecily Brown's painting Suddenly Last Summer at just $2.5 million (not that that's chump change), the work sold for an impressive $6.8 million—proving how in-demand the British painter is today.

 • Leading Neo-Expressionist painter Per Kirkeby passed away earlier this week, we're sad to say. He'll always be remembered for reinvigorating formalism and painterly techniques during a time when it was not in trend to do so.
