Tom Fairs

Most of Tom Fairs’s drawings are quick translations of tranquil scenes, glimpses at nature and landscape, many no larger than an index card. Yet in these approximately 20 square inches there exists a dictionary of mark-making techniques, references, and triumphs. Fairs drew on calligraphy as well as the brushstrokes and patterning of Post-Impressionism in order to transform ordinary observations into profound meditations on the organization of reality. He taught fine art and stage design at the Central School of Art and the Royal College of Art from 1954-1987.

Born in 1925, Tom Fairs died in 2007. His estate is represented by the Kerry Schuss Gallery.
