Stacie Johnson
Viewing her creative process as a conversation between her canvas and her materials, Stacie Johnson paints geometric compositions formed by intuitive and non-objective mark-making. Johnson is deeply interested in the fine line between art and object, employing abstract painting as a way to test the boundary between the two. These works both question and emphasize the interaction between the space depicted within the painting through mathematical abstraction and the actual space the work inhabits. In doing so, her paintings oscillate between art and object.
Beginning with her solo exhibition in 2005 at the Contemporary Art Workshop in Chicago, Johnson has displayed several additional solo shows at galleries such as the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Iowa, Bull & Ram in New York, Ebersmoore in Chicago, SOFA in Austin, and Old Gold in Chicago. Johnson has also contributed her work to a number of group exhibitions at galleries including The Pit in Los Angeles, Knockdown Center in Queens, Calico in Brooklyn, Hap Gallery in Portland, and The University of Illinois among countless others.
