Servane Mary

Mixed media artist Servane Mary appropriates vintage images from magazines and advertising from the 1940's to the 1970's. She uses found photography to explore underlying social and political issues with particular attention to gender. Her work often includes imagery of cowgirls, guns, and scenes from World War II, which recalls the work of Gerhard Richter, Barbara Kruger, and Richard Prince. Mary emphasizes the physical and ephemeral nature of recollection through her plexi sculpture and prints on fabric. Her practice explores shifting layers of memory and understanding in contemporary historical narrative.

Mary’s work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including Ecole Nationale Superieur des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, Fairview Museum of History and Art, Utah, and the Swiss Institute, New York. Her work has been featured in Interview Magazine, Art Review Magazine, Art Forum, and The New York Times.
