Sarah Anne Johnson

Canadian artist Sarah Anne Johnson completed her MFA at Yale in 2004 with a thesis project entitled Tree Planting. This ambitious installation recorded her summers spent in northern Canada in which she engaged in the communal activity of reforesting as a means of income. In this project, Johnson combines straight photographs with photographs recording "tableaux," scenes she created with little sculptural figures set in the landscape. These vignettes extend beyond the photographs she took during her summers in Canada, illustrating what she experienced both visually and emotionally. Johnson’s work has always embodied dualities between the real and the imagined or felt. Her skill at creating beautifully seen images in the world collide with the use of alternately aggressive or subtle interventions made in the studio.

Johnson’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions including Contemporary Art Museum Raleigh, Julie Saul Gallery, New York, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Canada, Institute of Contemporary Art, Winnipeg, Modern Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Anchorage Museum, Anchorage, Guggenheim Museum, New York, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Ottawa, and the 2012 Canadian Biennial, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
