Samira Abbassy
Iranian artist Samira Abbassy (b. 1965) is most known for her figurative oil and gesso paintings depicting the human figure, animals, and scenes of war. Her series titled "Eternal War" utilizes the lexicon of Persian miniature painting to trace the dark history of war from pre-modern times to the present. Appearing on a variety of panels, the narrative is open to interpretation.
In 1967, when she was just two years old, Abbassy moved to London, UK. She attended the Canterbury College of Art and following her graduation in 1987 she moved to New York, where she founded the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Program, a public charity program dedicated to giving artists of all disciplines and backgrounds a space to create.
Abbassy's work appears in private and public collections at the British Government Art Collection; The British Museum; the Burger Collection; the Rubin Museum in New York; the Farjaam Collection in Dubai; the Omid Foundation in Iran; and the Devi Foundation in India. She is the recipient of a number of awards including the Joan Mitchell Painting/Sculpture award (2010); the NYFA Award (2007); and a Yaddo Residency Fellowship (2006).
