Regine Kolle

Regine Kolle’s buoyant and illustrative paintings, videos, and prints are attractive and rather unique for her time and place. Unlike many European artists of her generation, Kolle’s interest in figuration, dessin, and directness eschews the pedantry of some contemporaries. The German-born, Paris-based artist draws widely from late culture: television, Richard Prince’s “Nurse” paintings, comics, the legacy of Pop art. Many of her works involve storytelling, whether between various still images, moving pictures, or the story of their creation. For example, a 2005 series of animations and paintings, I’m so green, was developed around a single character, Kai-Y, whose daily life is chronicled while the world expands around him, consuming him in its color and graphic beauty.
