Miguel Ángel Rojas

Miguel Ángel Rojas is a renowned Brazilian conceptual artist interested in questioning and revisiting socio-political and cultural conflicts afflicting today’s society. For example, Negocios grandes y pequeños (Big and Small Businesses) (2013) arises from a profound reflection on Colombia’s persistent economic inequalities. Large-scale drawings, video installations, and sculptural pieces employing historically charged materials such as coca leaves, gold, silver, and native grass, act as metaphors that refer to the increasing disparities in income and wealth, resulting from misguided public policies (or lack thereof). For Rojas, art is an ethical and inclusive space that for years has allowed him to reflect upon themes as complex as drug trafficking, injustice, double standards, and war.

He has had solo exhibitions in Bogotá at Museo de Arte de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Museo de Arte del Banco de la República, and Museo de Arte Moderno. His work has been presented in group exhibitions internationally at institutions such as Daros Latinamerica Collection in Zurich, Museo del Barrio in New York, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
