Michael Fullerton
While still honoring traditional portraiture Michael Fullerton’s paintings investigates the pitfalls of miscommunication. His subjects are drawn from mass media: famous journalists, wrongfully convicted prisoners, incriminated political figures, media icons, and the internet. Integral to his work are the stories of the faces he paints. His chosen subjects bring into question ideological beliefs, systems of communication, and accepted social dynamics and values. Aesthetically his work is referential to 18th century portraitists, drawing especially from artists like Thomas Gainsborough.
With an early solo show in 1997 at the British Council in Glasgow, Fullerton has also displayed work at the Carl Freedman Gallery in London, Greene Naftali in New York, Chisenhale Gallery in London, Art Basel Miami Beach, the Tate Britain in London, and Transmission Gallery in Glasgow. He has participated in group shows at the Tate Britain in London, Leeds Art Gallery in Nottingham Castle, GoMA in Glasgow, and ABC: Art Berlin Contemporary in Berlin. His work can be found in a number of public collections including the Art Council Collection, British Council Collection, Cranford Collection, Saatchi Collection, V&A Museum Collection, and Zabludowicz Collection all in London as well as the Farjam Collection in Dubai and Susan and Michael Hort Collection …
