Matthew Burrows

The absurd, surreal figure painting of Matthew Burrows uses cartoonish means to examine powerful psychological drives. Their colorful, biomorphic forms float or crumple together in suggestive images of desire and gratification. Works such as his 2011 oil painting, A Taste for Paradise, feature thin paint worked into dense surfaces populated by organ-like or floral forms, both beautiful and dark. Burrows studied at the Royal College of Art in London and was selected as the Gloucester Cathedral Artist in Residence in 1999. He is the recipient of several prizes and his work has been shown and collected by several museums throughout the United Kingdom.
