Marilyn Lerner

New York based artist Marilyn Lerner creates geometric abstract paintings that are informed by her travels throughout Asia and interest in Javanese and Algerian Raï folk music. In her compositions she transcribes notes and sounds into colors and shapes. Lerner is invested in the process of creating work and in generating a multi-sensory narrative for viewers. She writes, “Painting is like taking a journey.  It is not just about arriving at the final destination, but also about the experiences along the way.”

Lerner’s work has been widely exhibited in group and solo shows, including Butler Gallery, Ireland, John Good Gallery, NY, Novella Gallery, NY, Mary Boone Gallery, NY, and Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, NY. She has received the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Individual Artist Grant, Indo American Fulbright Scholarship, McDowell Colony Fellowship, and grants from New York Foundation for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, and National Endowment For the Arts.
