Marcos Chaves
Through sculpture, installation, painting, and photography, Marcos Chaves documents the things and people around him, inventing a wholly new context for the banal stuff of everyday life. Familiar objects become transformed in Chaves's work: in the 2002 work Lugar de sobra (Plenty of room), a collection of wooden stools is rebirthed as a dynamic installation, while Barbeadores de plástico e fio de náilon (1989), whose title translates to "disposable razors and nylon strings," is composed of the titular objects. His photo series Retratos (2008) documents an archive of mops, each image tenderly capturing the household tool with the care of a portrait, conjuring a sense of humanity in an inanimate object. Chaves received a bachelor's degree in Architecture and Urbanism, the influence of which is seen in his tendency to create images that are aware of structure and form. Though he has touched on many concerns and histories over time, any work by Chaves shares the same vision: in his work, our world becomes transformed and the familiar cast in a new light.
