Liam Everett
Directed by bodily movements and inspired by an affinity for dance, theatre, and philosophy Liam Everett transforms traditional painting materials and everyday substances into texturally rich gestural paintings. His abrasive application of salt, lemon juice, and alcohol to bleach, smudge, and fade thick layers of oil and acrylic paint expose the presence of Everett’s hand within his own work and leave ominous traces of what once laid on the surface of the canvas. After facing Everett’s harsh inflictions, the canvases, while polished and finely maintained, look as if they have experienced decades of removed and painted over stories to finally reveal a collection of marks that pay homage to lost and forgotten histories. Each piece is incredibly labor intensive, employing techniques which stress temporality, repetition, and continuity despite the fragmented composition. His practice rejects the customary act of painting and questions the static nature of the tradition.
Everett’s laborious works have recently been featured at solo exhibitions at Kamel Mennour in Paris, Altman Siegel in San Francisco, Office Baroque in Brussels, Eleni Koroneou Gallery in Athens, and On Stellar Rays in New York.
