Juliana Cerqueira Leite
The spirit of Cerqueira Leite's work aligns itself with post-minimalist concerns of the body in space. Her sculptures are visually striking and tactile—often leading to feminist readings, especially owing to their historical influences and performative exuberance. However, Cerqueira Leite maintains that her works do not have a specifically “feminist agenda,” but rather the undeniably corporeal dimension to her work shows a struggle between narrative and context that addresses universal human conditions. Her sculptures reconcile the "practice" of art making with the bodies of its creator and spectators, portraying the contingency of means and end, input and output.
Cerqueira Leite has had solo exhibitions at Cass Sculpture Foundation, West Sussex, Casa Triângulo, São Paulo, T.J. Boulting, London, Galleria Lorcan O’Neill, Rome, A.I.R. Gallery, Dumbo, New York, Trolley Gallery, Trolley Books, London and The Banff Arts Centre, Alberta. Her work has been included in group shows at Schönleinstraße 33, Berlin, Anthology Film Archives, New York, DUVE Gallery, Berlin, Art Basel Miami Beach, Miami, the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, Marrakech Bienniale 4, Marrakech, Torrance Art Museum, California, Hannah Barry Gallery, London, Saatchi Gallery, London, and The Courtauld Institute of Art, London, amongst others.
