Judith Schaechter

Philadelphia based artist Judith Schaechter is known for her stained glass works that depict distorted faces and figures, and often function as parables. Though the narratives Schaechter constructs are often cautionary or instructive, they are devoid of religious content, congruent with the artist’s self-professed atheism. The long history of religious stained glass is juxtaposed with Schaecter’s contemporary, distorted depictions of often grotesque characters experiencing pain or suffering. 

Schaechter has exhibited widely, including New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, The Hague, and Vaxjo, Sweden. Her work was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial, and a collateral exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2012. She is the recipient of many grants, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in Crafts, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, The Joan Mitchell Award, two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts awards, The Pew Fellowship in the Arts and a Leeway Foundation grant.
