Jonathan Allen

Jonathan Allen's work draws on myriad sources, referencing art history, pop culture, and current events to engage the current cultural landscape. Working at the intersection of various media, including painting, drawing, and collage, Allen comments on contemporary life under capitalism and its attendant social values, behaviors and constructs. He pieces together fragmentary imagery to form abstract landscapes and dreamlike apparitions that explore the forces of desire, ethics, money, history, and power.

Allen's drawings and paintings have been exhibited at a number of New York galleries and not-for-profit spaces including Lu Magnus, PS122, Socrates Sculpture Park, Exit Art, Rotunda Gallery, and Artists Space. He was selected for the 2009-10 Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace residency and participated in the Bronx Museum of Art Artist in the Marketplace program. In 2008, Jonathan Allen was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. In 2010, Brooklyn Arts Press published SUPERSTRUCTURE, a monograph on his work.
