Jonathan Anderson
Crashing into London’s fashion scene in 2008 Jonathan Anderson quickly became recognized for his innovations in design that explore the human form, gender fluidity, and creative collaborations with other contemporary artists. His eponymous brand, J.W. Anderson, is celebrated for its battle to remove the body from the garment in denunciation fabrication at the demand of gender specific body standards and in pursuit of an artistic sculptural consideration. His modern interpretation of masculinity and femininity allows for the creation of unadulterated design, producing intellectually and aesthetically provocative pieces. The blurring of all traditional boundaries is the linchpin of Anderson’s practice. He constantly defies the conventions of the fashion industry by collaborating with contemporary artists from fields as far reaching as ceramics in attempt to make high fashion less precious. Recently his interest in modern art and thirst for experimentation has resulted in an exhibition which aims to re-contextualize runway looks in conversation with modern art. This exhibition displays his own personal investigation of the human form in art, fashion, and design, allowing viewers to question an emotional response to the correspondence of these mediums.

After Anderson realized his brand J.W. Anderson, he expanded it from an elaborate collection of accessories into complete menswear and womenswear collections. Key stockists include Barneys, Opening Ceremony, Dover Street Market, Selfridges, Harrods, Le Bon Marche and Printemps, Joyce, Isetan & 10 Corso Como are key advocates in Asia, whilst Net-a-Porter, Moda Operandi & Matches are the main online shopping destinations for J.W. Anderson pieces. In the past accolades have included British Fashion Awards for “Emerging Talent, Ready-to-Wear,” “The New Establishment Award,” and “Menswear Designer of the Year.” Most recently at the 2015 British Fashion Awards the brand received an historic double award for “Menswear” and “Womenswear Designer of the Year,” the first time any brand has ever won both prestigious awards. With much critical acclaim and commercial success he was consequently named creative director of Madrid based luxury fashion house Loewe. In 2017 he curated the exhibition “Disobedient Bodies: J.W. Anderson Curates the Hepworth Wakefield,” as a unique artistic venture.
