Joan Aglaia
Joan Aglaia, a New York City artist, creates abstract paintings comprised of several layers achieved through an additive, subtractive and kinetic process. Emotion and sensory perception work in tandem as each painting is weaved together by spontaneity, precision and interpretation.
Music and poetry are strong underlying influences in Joan Aglaia’s paintings. Mindful of rhythm, dimension and context, she captures the energy and spirit of a particular verse or stanza connecting it to the original subject. The words of Maya Angelou and Rupi Kaur as well as the lyrics and music of Marvin Gaye, Dolly Parton, Polo & Pan, Poolside, Diana Ross and Soulwax have strongly influenced her paintings. The artists Kathryn Mac, Julie Mehretu, Georgia O’Keefe and Mary Weatherford have also inspired her creative process.
Joan Aglaia earned her BFA in studio art from Colorado College in 2011. After college, she lived in Aspen, Colorado, where she designed hand-painted graphics for a custom ski company, Grizzly Boards, from 2014 - 2016.
