Jan Van Imschoot

Jan Van Imschoot's work explores the possibilities of painting as a medium, and touches on themes of freedom, cenorship, and the inherent violence of political and ideological systems. His paintings reference art historical figures including Goya, Matisse, Luc Tuymans, and Tintoret. Imschoot self-describes his technique as 'anarcho-baroque,' categorized by a distortion of perspective, figures in motion, and strong, dark tones. His brushwork is both erratic and detailed, and his composition appears intentionally off-kilter, unsettling, and disorienting.

Jan Van Imschoot has participated in solo exhibitions at galleries in Europe and the United States including Galerie Daniel Templon in Paris, France (2016); Galerie Karl Pfefferle in Munich, Germany (2015); ltd los angeles in Los Angeles, California (2012); Galerie Charlotte Moser in Geneva, Switzerland (2009); Galerie Baronian Francey in Brussels, Belgium (2008); Muka Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand (2008); Bonakdar Jancou Gallery in New York (2000) and more. He has also participated in group exhibitions internationally including The State of Things, curated by Luc Tuymans & Ai Weiwei at The National Art Museum of China in Beijing; the Western China International Biennale at the TianYe Art Museum in China; Stephen Friedman Gallery in London, UK; and Galerie Daniel Templon in Paris, France.
