Jacolby Satterwhite

Jacolby Satterwhite uses a variety of mediums including video, performance, three-dimensional animation, fibers, drawing and printmaking to explore themes of memory, desire, and personal and public mythologies. His body of work The Matriarch's Rhapsody utilizes his mother’s drawings and music recordings as a primary resource, influenced by consumer culture, medicine, fashion, surrealism, math, sex, astrology, philosophy, and matrilineal concerns. The drawings—mostly of common objects and luxury products found in the domestic sphere—are an action of repurposing everyday objects drawn by the artist’s mother, and queering their meaning in a performative, animated narrative. Satterwhite’s practice has its roots in Dadaist, Surrealist, and Fluxus attitudes, paring down multiple drawings to create a time-based narrative out of a an intersection of text, rendered objects, and dance performance. His process is an attempt to examine memory, insider/outsider art practices, queer phenomenology, and to push the tensions created during translation and inheritance of studio practice.

Satterwhite has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows including the 2014 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, San Diego; The New Museum, New York; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston; and Studio Museum in Harlem, New York.
