Guler Ates

Turkish born, award-winning photographer Guler Ates has been making a name for herself in the art world since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2008. Her complex and deeply immersive photographs are often shot in locations that bring together Middle Eastern exoticism and Victorian propriety, reflecting her own feelings of dual identity. Ates is particularly interested in the emotive issue of the veiled woman and has returned time and again to themes of concealment and exposure, pattern and motif.

She has held solo exhibitions in Japan, India and the UK while her work has also appeared in dozens of group exhibitions around the world. She has undertaken residencies in India, Spain, London and Paris. Ates works in our Royal Academy Schools as a Digital Print Tutor and has given artist talks at several other UK institutions.
