Gitte Schäfer
Gitte Schäfer’s eclectic assemblages explore the union of painting and sculpture in reference to the practice of collage adopted by early modernists and based upon a fundamental understanding of semiotics. Her work projects intuitive childlike exploration as she incorporates found images and objects from the past that she then reappropriate into playful motifs. Displacing images and objects from their traditional function within the built environment and visual culture, Schäfer creates a dialogue which transcends place and time to evoke genuine emotion. Her paintings draw upon art history, however her implementation of unconventional acrylics, inks, crayons, and ballpoint pens disrupt accepted tradition. Her larger sculptures are composed upon unity of shape, matter, and color, allowinh each piece to abandon their character as a single object, instead working as a complete unit that reveals an aura of honesty.
Schäfer has recently exhibited her work in solo shows at Lullin + Ferrari in Zurich, Mehdi Chouakri in Berlin, Galleria s.a.l.e.s. in Rome, and Kirkhoff – Contemporary Art in Copenhagen. Additionally Schäfer has been featured in group exhibitions at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg in Austria, Sorø Kunstmuseum in Sorø, Denmark; and Opelvillen Rüsselsheim in Rüsselsheim, Germany among others.
