Francisco Tropa
Sculpture has been a permanent interest in the artistic practice of Francisco Tropa, who works have gained significant attention from institutions and critics since the beginning of the 1990s. Tropa uses several media, including sculpture itself, drawing, performance, photography or film, to convene a series of reflections introduced by the different traditions of sculpture. Subjects such as body, death, nature, landscape, memory, origin and time are always present in his works, in an endless process of projection of references from the history of art, from other art works, from previous works of the artist, and from specific authors. Notions of device and spectator are also fundamental to understand his practice, which defies all the traditional categories of art, in representation and perception.
Tropa has had a number of solo exhibitions and presentations including Museu de Lisboa, Lisboa, Portugal, Palazzo da Ponte di calle del Dose, Venice, Italy, Galeria Quadrado Azul, Porto, Portugal, Auditório do Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, Porto, Portugal, Galerie Jocelyn Wolff, Paris, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, and the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, Bruxelles, Belgium, among others. He represented Portugal at the 2011 54th Venice Biennale. Tropa also participated in Istanbul Biennial (2011), Manifesta (2000), Melbourne Biennial (1999) …
