Emma Lawrenson
Emma Lawrenson graduated from the Royal College of Art having studied for an MA in printmaking. Her work explores the processes and techniques involved in screen printing, with particular emphasis towards hand-drawn marks combined with interactions of subtle colour. Lawrenson’s style is minimal, abstract, understated, and elegant with inspiration coming from her rural Yorkshire landscape and artists such as Agnes Martin, Ben Nicholson, and the American colour-field artists of Ellsworth Kelly and Sol LeWitt. She pursues a carefully considered approach to form and space, creating thoughtful and harmonious pieces, some geometrical, others more fluid and organic. Colour is integral to her practice, working with it intuitively to create prints with a feeling of calm.
Lawrenson prepares hand drawn stencils, which, after being transferred onto large silk screens, are then used to apply each colour individually onto beautiful paper, meticulously layering and building up the prints little by little. The time it takes to create each print is a homage to sincerity and craftsmanship. Her work has been exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer show on multiple years along with exhibitions across the UK and Europe.
