Dwayne Butcher

Dwayne Butcher creates witty text-based paintings, sculptures, and videos that explore stereotypes of the American South. Butcher is best known for his black and white paintings of humorous phrases that probe notions of masculinity, sexuality, and body image. As he explains, his work is directly connected to lived experience, “I actually am a hillbilly from Arkansas with aspirations of integrating into the highbrow art world. Now, I capitalize on contradictions in my pieces that counter my southern masculine roots.”

Dwayne Butcher’s work has been shown in group and solo shows internationally, including David Lusk Gallery, TN, Cheekwood Museum of Art, TN, Doris Mae, DC, TotalKunst Gallery, Edinburgh, Galway Arts Centre, Ireland, and Kreuzberg Pavillion, Berlin. His films have been screened at the Indie Memphis Film Festival, TN, Oxford Film Festival, MS, and Frost Street Art Space, NY.
