David Jester

Born in Palm Springs but raised mostly in San Diego. Jester was mostly self taught, drawing and/or painting all his life. After receiving his undergraduate from VCU he continued his education with a MFA from Rutgers University. After school Jester was faced with a dilemma pursue his art or raise his 2 sons with his partner. He worked for Sony creating commercial work much like Warhol did before defining his signature
aesthetic.

Jester’s work developed from observations within the LGBTQ community with a keen interest in the anonymity derived from applications utilized for men to meet other men. These scenarios, placed in the backdrop of Palm Springs use water to both distort the identity of his subjects—and pay homage to the duality present in each reflection. On one end there is a primal self, driven by instinct to treat another in a manner one would never in polite society, and on the other, there is the gentlemanly form, Apollonian and beautiful. Jester’s works are large oil paintings on wood. Each is part of a larger narrative, either an archetype or a specific individual the artist has met online.
