Dashiell Manley

The multimedia, multi-dimensional works of Los Angeles based artist Dashiell Manley take inspiration from cultural and art historical narrative including early filmmaking, Eadweard Muybridge and the 1903 film, The Great Train Robbery. Melding these various references into abstract paintings and chromatic site-specific installations, Manley addresses notions of perception, framing and material. The artist also creates stop-motion films from his massive collection of found and taken photographs, and writes performative characters that often interact with his three-dimensional structures. Working with representational imagery, text, media and brightly colored, abstract form, Manley laboriously transforms his materials to redefine context and space, whether transcribing miniscule text from the New York Times or reimagining a classic Western in sprays of ink and lighting gels.

Manley has exhibited in solo shows at Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco, Redling Fine Art, Los Angeles, and Luce Gallery, Torino, Italy. He has shown in group exhibitions at various galleries and institutions worldwide including, The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Galerie Andreas Huber, Vienna, LACMA, Los Angeles, and Museums & Galleries of NSW, Sydney, Australia.
