Carmen McLeod

Carmen McLeod’s sculptures and paintings are created through a process of material experimentation. Allowing the properties of her various chosen media to direct the final form of each piece, McLeod states that she “draws out and elaborates on the tension between the given and the chosen.” Working with cloth, wood, pigment, essentially the materials that make up the canvas, the artist manipulates the materials through weaving, painting and sculpting, adding layers of visual and conceptual depth. Influenced by various art historical movements, including German Romanticism and Minimalism, McLeod re-imagines, re-cycles and collages her pieces, challenging conventions of artistic language, space and material.

McLeod has shown at a number of galleries and institutions, including CRG Gallery, New York, NY, Conner Contemporary Art, Washington DC, Steuben Galleries, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, DC, and Catherine Clark Gallery, San Francisco, CA.
