The scope of her research extends to time, the camera and the positions it defines; the linguistic, political and conceptual frame through which actions or events are seen, the way a formal structure unfolds or obscures, and the meaningful potential of improvisation by maker, subject and spectator.
Her films frequently start out through research into specific social structures or events, which she transforms into collaborative work, performance and moving image. Santiago Muñoz’s recent work has been concerned with the material and physical trace of abstract political ideas, particularly post-military spaces, and the relationship between new landscapes and social forms.
Santiago Muñoz’s recent exhibitions include Pérez Art Museum (PAMM), Miami, CAPC Bordeaux, France, TEORética, San José, Costa Rica, Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, México City, Guggenheim Museum of Art, Transmission Gallery for Glasgow International, Gasworks, London, CCA Wattis, TATE Film and VII Bienal do Mercosul.
