Anthony Pearson

While the practice of Los Angeles based artist Anthony Pearson is rooted in photography, his practice expands to include media such as plaster, bronze, and clay. Drawing correlations between positive and negative space, Pearson experiments and manipulates his materials, elevating their various qualities to further investigate the poetic dichotomy between dark and light. Many of his plaster works combine reactive textures and delicate reliefs to reflect the light surrounding them, aided by Pearson’s use of Hydrocal, a high-strength gypsum cement, which produces gradations and subtle sheens.

Pearson’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, and Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis. Forthcoming exhibitions include Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago, and David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles. Pearson’s work is in the public collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
